Depart from Lake Titicaca where you will overnight in the traditional Sun Island, considered the cradle of the Inca Empire. Not to be missed: because of it’s location, Sun Island offers one of the best sunrises in the world.
Then, travel to La Paz and explore this fascinating city through the eyes of a local. Fly to Sucre, where the reminiscent of Spanish colonization can be seen in it’s colonial architecture. And a visit to Cal Orcko -Dinosour Park- is a must for those interested in archaeology. Travel to Potosi, a city with a lot of history for being once the richest city of the New World.
Finally travel to Uyuni where you can start your 4WD adventure to the mesmerizing salt flats of Uyuni.
Depart Puno (Peru) by road for the lakeside village of Copacabana, where you’ll visit the 16th century shrine before boarding a motorboat for Sun Island. On arrival, you will have a traditional lunch and then a one hour hike to your ecolodge, take it slow and enjoy the increasingly stunning views over Lake Titicaca.
Make sure you wake early to see the sunrise over the Royal Andean Mountains, bathing the snowy peaks in golden light. After breakfast, you will hike down to the dock and take the boat up to La Chincana Ruins and the Sacred Rock. Navigate to Moon Island to visit the Iñak Uyu Inca Temple, then on to Copacabana. Continue by road to La Paz, the world’s highest capital.
Half-day tour visiting the colonial centre of La Paz and the exotic stalls of the Witches’ Market. Continue to the Valley of the Moon to see the otherworldly rock formations formed by erosion.
Take a short flight to Sucre, located at just 2,800m and with an agreeable springtime climate. Afternoon tour of the city, with its picturesque white washed colonial buildings. Finish with a trip to Recoleta for views over the city and surrounding valleys.
Half-day tour visiting the incredible Cal Orcko Dinosaur Park just outside the city for the chance to see 65 million year old dinosaur footprints, preserved in stone. For market lovers, ensure you are in Sucre on a Sunday and we’ll arrange a visit to the traditional Tarabuco markets.
After breakfast, transfer by road to Potosi, a spectacular trip that takes you from the moderate lowlands of Sucre to the staggering heights of one of the world’s highest cities at 4,090m. Afternoon city tour exploring what was once the richest city of the New World.
Day at leisure. Option: A visit to the Cerro Rico Mine is worthwhile but it certainly not for everyone, due to the cramped and claustrophobic nature of the excursion. Discuss whether this is right for you with your consultant.
