Belmond Andean Explorer is South America’s first sleeper train, launched in 2017. In 2019, it was voted the World’s Best Train by Conde Nast readers. And it is certainly one of our favourite train journeys in Latin America.
There are 35 cabins on board, ranging from compact bunk and twin-bedded options to more spacious suites. Each cabin boasts private en suites, air conditioning and 24/7 call buttons. And there is oxygen tanks and masks for every cabin. So, while this may be one of the highest train journeys in the world, you don’t need to worry about the altitude. Meals are served in the two luxurious dining cars while the lounge car offers a space for guests to relax and swap stories. And there is even a spa on board for the ultimate in pampering!
But what about the journey itself? Well, the Belmond Andean Explorer encompasses some of Peru’s most renowned scenery. Travel from the former Inca capital of Cuzco to the shores of Lake Titicaca. And then continue to the baroque city of Arequipa. Along the way you’ll take in snow-capped Andean peaks, terraced farmland and fertile valleys. Not to mention alpacas, llamas, vicuñas and maybe even the mighty Andean condor.
Board the Belmond Andean Explorer train in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca empire. Settle down and unwind in your luxurious cabin as the train begins its journey southeast towards Puno.
Savour your first lunch on board in one of the elegant dining cars. Refined Andean specialities are served with contemporary flair.
After, disembark to visit Raqch’i. Once an important control point for the Incas, it is today a fascinating archaeological site brimming with history. Return to the train just in time for tea.
Soak up the sensational sunset over La Raya Mountain range, before preparing yourself for an elegant dinner on board. Afterwards, perhaps head to the bar car and chat to your fellow travellers as the train continues to Lake Titicaca, where it will stable for the evening.
Awake early to catch the breathtaking sunrise across Lake Titicaca, before enjoying a delicious breakfast on board.
Today’s tours explore the eclectic beauty and rich diversity of life on Lake Titicaca, the largest lake in South America and home to many islands. First you’ll take a traditional boat ride out to the Uros Islands, stunning man-made lands carefully created from woven reeds that are constantly being replenished.
Continue on to Taquile island, a beautiful island with a way of life barely touched by time. Enjoy a private lunch on Collata Beach, with demonstrations from traditional dancers and artisanal workers.
Return to the train for tea as your journey continues on to Arequipa. In the afternoon take the opportunity to disembark and find out more about this stunning city, considered one of the most important settlements in Peru.
Return to the train for a final delicious dinner, before retiring to your cabin for a restful night.
Enjoy breakfast before setting off on an early-morning excursion to the spellbinding, rugged scenery of Lake Lagunillas. Afterwards visit Sumbay Caves, home to fascinating cave paintings that estimated to be almost 8,000 years old.
Return to the train for lunch as the trains continues to Arequipa. Here we bid farewell as you disembark, either for a panoramic city tour or for your transfer to the airport.
Please note: You may choose to leave the train early at Cañahuas and continue on to explore Colca Canyon.
