Looking for the next hiking adventure? Guatemala has just what you need. Trek from Antigua to Atitlan in this incredible 4-day 3-night Sky Route Trek through this beautiful country! We tell you day by day what this trek looks like.
The journey Sky Route Trek Guatemala starts in Antigua, where we recommend spending one or two days prior to your trek to explore this beautiful destination. Once the trek starts you will be taken to San Andres Itzapa, where the locals dedicate a shrine to the Mayan deity of San Simon. Take some time to light a candle to bless your travels!
After a blessed start, we begin our trek through the lush plantation of Guatemala’s’ cloud forest. Whilst we walk upwards (around 2,650 masl) we will see the Acatenango Volcano. This volcano is the highest in the Antigua Valley, making this view one to remember. We will have lunch in a secluded area of the protected forest to then descend downwards under the canopy trees covered in orchids and bromeliads. A nice campfire and dinner await us as we finish our first day of the trek.
We start the day descending into the agricultural fields of La Vega River Valley (about 580 masl). After crossing hanging bridges, we will climb up through coffee plantations and have lunch at a Mayan village. Then, we continue trekking up to arrive at Fuego Camp where we will have time to relax and enjoy the panoramic views that include Fuego Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. We might even have some night light show of lava!
Today you will immerse yourself in the finest natural landscape of Guatemala. We start hiking up to the highest point of our journey just over 9,000 ft / 2,745 m. While we hike the panoramic view reveals six volcanoes and cloud forest of unique plants and wildlife.
Along the way, local farmers tell us about the agricultural practices in the region. After we start descending towards the Agua camp, but before we will enjoy lunch and a siesta. Just before arriving into the Agua Camp, named after Lake Atitlan, we venture into the local Mayan community of Chuinimachicaj. Here a cooperative of Mayan women shows us the traditional backstrap weaving. This technique has been used for over centuries in Mesoamerica.
For our last day of the Sky Route Trek, we descend about 820 meters into La Madre Vieja River valley, a landscape of patched agricultural fields and small villages. In the Valley, we will visit a coffee Finca to learn about the harvest and processing of specialty coffee. No better way to start the morning!
After the morning coffee, we will cross hanging footbridges all the way to the rim of Lake Atitlan. Take some time to absorb the views of the lake surrounded by volcanoes. From there we visit the lakeside village of San Antonio Palopo to conclude the Sky Route Trek Guatemala.
