Best to travel in August: Lencois Maranhenses, Brazil

August 1, 2018

Are you looking to escape the Australian winter this August? Well, don’t look any further! This is the ideal time of year to visit one of Brazil’s most captivating natural spectacles – the lagoons of Lençois Maranhenses.

What’s special about it?

The name Lençois Maranhenses means “bed sheets” in Portuguese. And it’s easy to see how it earned this name – just look at the rolling, white sand dunes that stretch to the horizon. While the area is pretty at any time of the year, after the rainy season it becomes truly magical. That’s because of the hundreds of mini lagoons which appear in July and last until September, when they finally start to dry up.

How to get there?

The Lençois Maranhenses National Park takes a bit of effort to get to. But that just makes it all the more special once you arrive! Sao Luis is the closest city at around 4 hours drive. The park itself encompasses around 70km of coastline and reaches more than 50km inland. The most common point of entry is Barreirinhas, where a decent selection of accommodation can be found.

Exploring the park

Whether you choose a 4WD, quad bike or trek across the dunes, you can expect to be dazzled (literally) by the landscape. Blinding white dunes contrast with deep blue lagoons to create a dramatic spectacle. From the top of the dunes you can tumble into the cool waters of the pools – a welcome relief from the heat. Or, for a more adventurous option, hop on a sandboard and careen down into the waters below!
